My name is Joanne Dorme, and my alter ego "JoJo The Clown" was born in 1992. I love my job, and wish I could be clowning 40 hours a week! I purchased my company, JoJo's Party Pals, from a neighbor who was moving. (The original company name was Small World Entertainment, but someone incorporated and I had to change my name!).
My neighbor had been trained at Ringling Brothers years before, and taught me everything from makeup and balloons to magic and cheek art. (She tried to teach me to juggle, but I never made it beyond scarves!) I soon made the company my own, personalizing gifts, wands, stickers and magic tricks to really make the Guest of Honor feel special. I taught myself more elaborate balloons, and for the past year I have been learning all I can about professional face painting. I have met about 5 clowns in the 19 years I have been a birthday party clown, so for me the World Clown Association Convention in NY in March 2011 was like a wonderland! I miss being around all those clowns. But as the winner of a Bo-Dino Scholarship this year, I am really excited to be going to Mooseburger Clown Camp! I am excited every day to learn a new balloon, magic trick, or face painting technique. The only way this will ever feel "old hat" is when I lose my enthusiasm for learning new things. I live to make people smile.
It's the "WOW" moments that make my day, whether it's a great trick, balloon animal, or holding up my mirror to a child's face after I have transformed them into a princess or a superhero. I am blessed to have found my calling in this life, and I hope to be sponging clown white into my wrinkles for many years to come.
